What is a Hyperbaric Chamber?

What is a hyperbaric chamber? The first documented use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)  occurred in 1662 when a British physician created an airtight chamber, called a “domicilium.”  Since then hyperbaric oxygen therapy has become very popular in both medical and private use.

A hyperbaric chamber is a device that is made of metal, glass, or vinyl.  HBOT chambers are very versatile and come is all shapes, sizes  price ranges and specifications. There are medical hyperbaric chambers and mild hyperbaric chambers.  For the first time in history people are now able to experience the power of HBOT.

You can buy a chamber for yourself but you will need a prescription from you primary care physician or treating doctor.  If you want to open your own hyperbaric center you will need to be a physician.  It is federal law that it requires someone to be a doctor in order to see patients.  Do listen to sales people that will tell you anything to get a sale.  These are the laws.

There are three types of chambers.

This is due to the chamber being filled with %100 oxygen.  Extra precautions need to be taken for fire igniters (clothes, metal, electronics). The average cost of one of these chambers is between $150,000-$300,000.
  2. Polyplace Hyperbaric Chambers: Is a large chamber that can fit multiple people.  The hyperbaric chambers are large and usually the facility is built around the chamber due to it size.  You will typically see these chambers in a hospitals.  Thes chamber are fill with air and the patient receives 100% oxygen via oxygen hood.  At time there is multiple air lock so patients can enter and exit without losing pressure.  The cost of these session could reach into the thousands and treatment protocol are limited to only a few conditions.

Mild Hyperbaric chambers aka Portable Chamber.  These are becoming more popular everyday.  For the first time you can now have a hyperbaric chamber in your home, office or clinic.  These chambers are very versatile and come in many shapes and sizes.  Air is used to pressurize the chamber between 1.3 ATA and 1.5 ATA.  These chambers have been approved for low oxygen levels (hypoxia) and is not covered under insurance.  Patients are able to get supplemental oxygen from a oxygen concentrator while the weather where a mask, cannula, or ambiantly.  You will need a prescription to purchase one of these chambers and the prices range from $3500-$20,000.
