Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in the US. It can be caused from shaking the head violently, bumping or getting hit in the head.   This abrupt motion of the head will cause the brain to move and smash up against the inside of the skull damaging the brain, blood vessels and nerve tissue.

Signs of concussion can be tricky. Look for the obvious cuts or bruising on the head, face or scalp. Symptoms may be immediate or take days to show.

Common signs of concussion are:

  • Confusion
  • Clumsiness
  • Dazed and confused
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Balance problems or dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Sluggishness
  • Ringing in ears (Tinnitus)
  • Behavior or personality changes
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Memory loss

The Three Types of Concussions

Grade 1 Concussions are graded as mild, Grade 2 moderate, or Grade 3 severe, depending on such factors as loss of consciousness, amnesia, and loss of equilibrium.

Grade 1 concussion, symptoms last for less than 15 minutes. There is no loss of consciousness.

Grade 2 concussion, there is no loss of consciousness but symptoms last longer than 15 minutes.

Grade 3 concussion, the person loses consciousness, sometimes just for a few seconds.
